Electric Fence Noise

This is intended as a field guide for those persons involved in the clearing of faults due to electric fence noise (interference)

1. The target pair must be tested with a balance of > 60db when performing a Power influence Test. If the balance is <60 db the pair can not be used to work this trouble. The trouble on the pair should be repaired or find a pair that test 60 db or greater.

2. The Power Influence Test has to be taken from the field end of the cable.

3. The fence in question in most cases can be identified by using a tone probe and drive the cable route. Once found the electoral fence should be turn off to make sure it is the right fence.

4. The fence must be a open circuit ( Not a Loop )

5. Close loop fences should be avoided.

6. The fence should be clean of all grass and circuit to ground. ( Broken insulators , )

7. The fence splices can not be loose.

8. The fence energizer ground field should be 40 yards from any point that the power neutral has contact with ground.

9. The fencer should have a good ground field that has been tested to see what its Ohms to ground are ( 1k or less is what I look for ) ( Test can be done with the resistance to ground test ).

The Cable

(The placement of ground rods will increase your lighting protection but it will not help to place ground rods on the cable route to reduce Noise)

The proper placement of #6 AWG wire from the Power neutral to the cable is of the utmost importance and should be the first of 2 steps taken when the work to reduce the Noise starts.

A. Place a P/N hook up at the end of all cables.
B. Place a P/N hook up at each side of the farmers fence ( On the cable)
C. Place a P/N hook up at all gages changes.
D. Place a P/N hook up every time the cable changes size.
E. Place a P/N hook up at all changes in placement of the cable ( Areal to Burred )
F. Place a P/N at each lateral leg
G. There should be a P/N at lease every 1800’ hook to the cable.
H. Placement of P/N hookups should be done when a closure or Ped is with in 15’ of the cable.

The Drop

The Drop is treated just like the cable it has to be hook to the P/N at broth ends. (If the Drop doses not have a shield replaces it with a Drop that is shield (At no time can a drop be longer than 1,000’)

The Shield 2ed Step
All bonds clips have to be 0 Ohms

a. All sections have to have a resistance of no more than 1.5 Ohms from P/N hook up to P/N hook up.
b. With a current flow meter every power section of cable  should have an A/C current flow on the shield (there is no set flow amount as long as it has an A/C current on the shield.)
c. A open shield can Not be bypassed with a wire on the ground ‘ ( this will cause more problems )
d. All straps from cable to cable in a splice or closure must be #6 AWG or larger.
e. The shield must be clean when placing bond clips (If the shield has a blue tint to it you will have to call me at
954-494-5657 It takes a different process to Place bone clips)
