Measure for a Capacitance Open

Equipment

• Open fault locator (capacitance test )

Test

• Place the red lead on the ring wire.
• Place the black lead on the Tip wire.
• Place the green lead on the tested ground ( If you can not test the ground then find the nearest power neutral and use that as your ground )
• The tip and ring leads have to be on a single pair. They can not be on two difference pairs
• Make the 3 tests and record the reading.

What can be done with the reading?

• The reading you received was a total of all the wires attached to the test set.
• The ground lead hooked to no ground will reduce your reading around 50%. If the ground lead is hooked to a ground with height resistance, you will get a reading based on the amount of resistance the untested Ground has.
• If the test comes back with the Tip to Ground and Ring to Ground measurements balanced and they are longer then the Tip to Ring measurement indicates, there is an open bond on the cable under test. ( this look at the bond will only work when the test set is set on air core cable regardless of the type of cable under test)
• If you are testing air core cable and you find that your reading is longer than the cable, you are working’ You may have water in the sheath ( See formula water in the cable)
