Pair Conditioning

The Cable pair conditioning for wideband service is intended for turn up or fault location function.

  1. Test equipment needed:
    • TDR
    • FED
    • Multifunction test set (I use a 965 DSP) there is many on the market.
  2. The test requirements for the wideband service you are to Install or Repair.
  3. Program your Test Set Auto test limits wide band.
  4. Set one auto test for each type of service.
  5. Place the FED at the office end of your Pair. ( This is a must the FED can not give a good test if it is placed on the field end of the pair )
  6. Test the ground with the ground fault function of your test set to insure a good ground at broth ends of the cable.
  7. Place the Test set at the field end of the pair.

The test requirements for each wide band service will differ from service to service. I will post them on this web site as I find them.

Testing with out a FED will tell you if a POTS line will work but it will not tell you anything about how a wide band service will perform.

HDSL, HDSL2, HDSL4 Pass / fail Values and specific test recommended provides sufficient “Single to Noise” allowing proper xDSL operation.

With FED

A/C Voltage (Tip to Ring)                             <3 Volts
A/C Voltage (Tip and Ring to ground)            <25 Volts
D/C Voltage (Tip, Ring to ground & tip to ring <3 Volts
Resistance Tip to Ring, Tip to Ground and Ring to ground > 3, 5 MEG. Ohms
Capacitive Balance (With FED)                  > 60 db

Resistance Balance (Difference to ground between Tip & Ring) >3 Ohms
Metallic Noise (dbm)                                 <20 dbm
Power Influence (dbm)                               <80 dbm
Longitude Balance (With FED only)            >60 db
Load Coils (Check with TDR for load coils close to test equipment) 0

Loop Resistance                 HDSL              < 800 Ohms
                                         HDSL2            <650 Ohms
                                         HDSL4            <1000 Ohm (1st section)
< 950 Ohms (all sections after)

Ground Resistance                                    >25 Ohms
F Noise filter (dbmf)
  (4.9 khz – 245 khz)           HDSL      < 48 bdmF or (-42 dbm)
                                         HDSL2    < 46 dbmF or (-44 dbm)
                                         HDSL4    < 40 dbmF or (-51 dbm)

Insertion Loss loop Attenuation
                         HDSL       <32 db (@196 khz)
                         HDSL2 up <26 db down <26 db (@8.6 khz-552 khz)
                         HDSL4 up <34 db down <36 db (@ 8.6 khz – 552 khz)
